Harpenden's Churches - before 1914

A sequence of mainly pre-1900 pictures of some of Harpenden’s churches.  In 1862, with the arrival of a new Rector, it was decided to pull down the cramped Norman nave of St Nicholas parish church – the congregation was growing and many could not see the chancel.  The first photos and paintings show the pre-1862 church, followed by pictures around St Nicholas after the rebuilding.

The rest of the sequence shows the Methodist churches in Leyton Road and Southdown, the first Catholic church, the Congregational (United Reformed) church and St John’s, Southdown – the ‘paper’ church of 1905 at the corner of Crabtree Lane and the new church in St John’s Road.

The section on churches in the Topics section will gradually be expanded with the stories of the various other churches and chapels in Harpenden.

  • Did this Methodist church become the Regent cinema? Any idea when that cinema closed? I’m thinking 59/60.

ed Yes, the Regent cinema was here from 1933 until it closed in 1959 – see our page on Harpenden’s three cinemas – http://www.harpenden-history.org.uk/page_id__68.aspx
