The M1 - bypass for Harpenden

M1, looking north across Friars Wash, now Junction 9, in c.1961

The Watford to Rugby section of the M1 was built with astonishing speed in 1958/9 and was opened on 2 November 1959.  It took traffic which formerly pounded up the A5 through Redbourn and the A6 (later A1081) through Harpenden.  It crosses the NW boundary of Harpenden parish at Friars Wash.
