Southdown Women's Institute Choir

Winning cups in the 1950s

Dinah Castle lent her family albums to the Society in early 2012.  These included a number of group photos of Southdown Women’s Institute Choir, winning trophies in the 1950s. Annie Weston nee Tuffin is identified in some, as are Mrs Ackroyd, Florrie Starkins, and Mr Byard, organist of High Street Methodist Church.

Do you know any other members of this choir?  If so, please add comments or contact us.

  • In the 5th photo, wearing glasses and looking away from the camera clapping, is my aunt Louie Johnson (Curl). She and my uncle Harry were active members of St. John’s church.

  • In the 4th photo, I think I have spotted my grandmother Kathleen Gray, she is in the back row 5th from the left. She was married to Douglas Gray and lived in Highfield Avenue.

  • Top picture, second row, third from right was Mrs. Chapman.  Lived next door to Oggelsby’s garage.  When my mum was making jam, I had to go to Mrs Chapman’s house for jam jars.  One of her sons Harold worked at Oggelsbys garage and could be seen twice a day marching down from the forge in Walkers Road carrying a jug of tea for the other mechanics.  Another son Ken used to have an Austin 7 and it seemed every weekend he had the engine in pieces.
