Percy English
Receiving the Insignia from the Lord Prior of St John, Earl Cathcart
A lifetime of service
By John Marlow
The Local History Society has recently received the superb photograph album of the late Percy English of Hatching Green, Superintendent of the Harpenden St John Ambulance Brigade.
The album includes photos of his outstanding service over 44 years; Commendations from the Queen relating to his promotions - eventually to Commander (Brother) of the Order of St John; and other memorabilia including fulsome testimonials on his retirement.
It also includes photos of the Cadets under training, parades and events at Flowton Priory, and at work in his garden and in the garden of the Priory.
The Society is indebted to Mrs Jill Hunt, also a long-serving St John's member, who has been looking after the album since it was forwarded on to her by Percy`s niece, Mrs Bygrave. It will in future be available for inspection in the History Room at Park Hall.
