Harpenden's smaller green spaces and the volunteers who inspired and help maintain them

2 June 2018

Postponed from 3 March, when Harpenden was deep in snow and chill, the exhibition on 2 June reflected the glorious sun-lit greens, open spaces, nature reserves and hidden corners of Green Harpenden. Organised by John Marlow, Diana Parrott and Rosemary Ross, it featured many local groups, who prepared their own displays:

St Albans District Council maintains playgrounds of playing fields at:

  • Westfield
  • Porters Hill,
  • Roundwood Lane (Old Bell)
  • Wood End/Kinsbourne Green and
  • Oakley Road/Parva Close in association with Southdown Play Areas Working Group,

and open spaces at:

  • Gilpin Green
  • Southdown Green
  • Hatching Green
  • Alzey Gardens and
  • Crabtree Fields
  • (as well as Harpenden Common, Rothamsted Park and Kinsbourne Green Common).

Harpenden Town Council maintains:

  • Pickford Corner/ also known at Batford Corner/Green
  • Batford Green along Lower Luton Road, with Herts County Council
  • Batford Springs and Marquis Playing Fields and playground in association with Batford Springs Volunteers.

The photos of the screens were taken in March and do not show added information and photos. For more details and images, contact the organisations who took part, or the organisers who used photos from the Local History archives.
