Harpenden Local History - Summer events 2016

Exhibition about the High Street, Harpenden Carnival and Armed Forces Day

By Rosemary Ross

June was a busy month for our curator, Les Casey, and the small team of helpers, with three major events to plan for and mount displays.

Exhibition about 100 Years of Changes in the High Street

On 4 June our quarterly exhibition featured an extensive display of photos illustrating "100 Years of Changes in Harpenden High Street - from Victorian times to the 21st century". This developed themes from the March exhibition - "The Changing Face of Harpenden High Street" and enabled this to reach a wider audience.

We have a wealth of information, old photos and advertisements for many of the shops and premises along the High Street, and plan to publish pages on many of them - such as the transformation of 6 High Street from Dr Kington's House to M&Co.

Some shops change hands very quickly and we need more volunteers to take photographs so that our records keep up-to-date. Until 1974 Kelly's Directory was published most years, and enables us to track changes reasonably accurately, but in future we will have to rely on photos, with carefully annotated dates!

Harpenden Carnival - 11 June 2016

Our stall at the Harpenden Carnival, which now includes 'Discovery Day' and takes place on the Common, was the occasion for the launch of our new publication - "The Story of Harpenden from Village to Town" - with copies selling at a brisk rate.

Young visitors were attracted to a Children's Activity - "Make a Harpenden Peg Doll" - organised by Katharine Robertson.

Armed Forces Day , 25 June 2016

This event posed us a challenge, as we were in a far corner of the 'triangle', away of the from the activities of the cadets and the climbing wall. Our stall focussed on National Service - which ended in the late 1950s.  The memoirs of several members of the Society, including John Seabrook, were set out, so we attracted the veterans!
