The Red House - A Fire on the 27 August 1896

St Albans Fire Brigade report form

Just 120 years after the disastrous fire which destroyed the first handsome Red House in Carlton Road, the Society has acquired, by donation, the St Albans Fire Brigade report and bill for attending the fire on 27 August 1896. The account was settled on 6 December 1896.

The house was reduced to a shell, and according to the Herts Advertiser report the damage was estimated at £10,000 to £12,000. The full report, attached as downloadable pages below, gives details of the luxurious fittings in Mr Vaughan Stevens’ newly built home. Remarkably he had the house rebuilt very soon afterwards, though in a somewhat more subdued style.
