Introduction to Harpenden's History

This part of our website aims to provide a summary of the history of the parish of Harpenden and how the scattered settlements and farms - from Falkners End to Bowling Alley (Southdown), from Kinsbourne Green to Hatching Green, from Cooters End to Topstreet and Batford - have developed and become modern Harpenden.  The Maps and Plans category will, we hope, be helpful.

The Picture Gallery complements this section with old photos and prints from our archives grouped into areas of the town.

We will also be opening up new pages in the Street by Street section of the website, so that you can share what you know about your house and its previous occupants, or about previous owners and users of the fields beneath.
