Station Road/Stakers Lane

The arrival of the railways, first at Batford in 1860 and then in central Harpenden in 1868 changed the character of old Stakers Lane, with pubs near each of the stations.  The western end, below the railway bridge, has seen many changes of shops.
Development along the lane between Harpenden and Batford has been piecemeal from Victorian times until the present day - the latest addition being the flats at St Stephen's Court on the site of Pinney's garage - formerly Great Northern farm.   As a millennium project in 2000 a number of residents in Station Road researched their houses and past owners, for a Local History Society exhibition.  Some of their discoveries have been added to the Street by Street category, where you can add what you have found out about your house.
